Can Cloudflare help me watch Netflix with their smart DNS service?

A smart DNS service is a type of DNS (Domain Name System) proxy service that enhances your internet experience by allowing you to access geo-restricted content. Here’s how it works:

  • Geo-unblocking: It reroutes your DNS queries through servers in different countries. When you request content that’s restricted to a particular region, the smart DNS service makes it appear as if you’re accessing the internet from that region.
  • DNS Resolution: Normally, your DNS requests are handled by your ISP’s DNS servers. With a smart DNS service, these requests are sent to the smart DNS provider’s servers instead, which can then respond with IP addresses that bypass geographic restrictions.
  • Privacy and Security: Unlike a VPN, a smart DNS service typically doesn’t encrypt all your internet traffic (although some services might offer both), but it can provide some level of privacy by hiding your DNS requests from your ISP. However, it does not hide your IP address from the websites you visit.
  • Performance: Smart DNS can potentially offer better performance than VPNs for streaming because it only reroutes DNS queries and not all your traffic, reducing latency.

Cloudflare offers a DNS service known as “Cloudflare DNS”, which can be configured for use as a smart DNS. Here’s how Cloudflare’s service could be used in this context:

  • 1.1.1.1: Cloudflare’s public DNS resolver. Users can set their devices or routers to use 1.1.1.1 as their DNS server, which can be faster and more private than many ISPs’ DNS services.
  • WARP: Cloudflare also offers WARP, which combines a VPN-like service with their DNS resolution, potentially acting as a smart DNS when configured to route traffic via certain countries to bypass geo-restrictions.

However, there are issues with using the Cloudflare Smart DNS service.

Cloudflare does not offer a Smart DNS service specifically designed for unblocking streaming services like Netflix. Here are some key points regarding Cloudflare’s DNS offerings:

  • Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1):
    • Purpose: Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 DNS service is primarily aimed at providing a faster, more private, and secure DNS resolution. It’s one of the fastest DNS resolvers globally, but it doesn’t focus on circumventing geo-restrictions for streaming services.
    • Privacy: Cloudflare has a strong privacy policy, promising not to log users’ IP addresses. However, this service does not inherently alter your IP address or location to bypass content restrictions.
    • Features: Besides DNS resolution, Cloudflare offers DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS (DoT) for enhanced security and privacy, but these features don’t help with streaming content from different regions.
  • Smart DNS for Streaming:
    • If you’re looking to watch Netflix from different regions, you would need a specialized SmartDNS service. These services work by changing your DNS settings to route your Netflix traffic through servers located in regions where the content you wish to watch is available.
    • Lack of SmartDNS: Cloudflare does not provide this kind of targeted service. Their DNS service will resolve domain names quickly, but it won’t make Netflix think you’re in a different country.
  • If you’re interested in using Cloudflare’s DNS for general internet use, you can certainly benefit from faster DNS resolution and increased privacy. However, for watching Netflix from different regions:
    • Alternative Services: You would need to look into other providers like Unlocator, SmartDNSProxy, or services like ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer, which offer Smart DNS specifically for streaming purposes.
    • VPN Option: Alternatively, pairing Cloudflare’s DNS with a VPN service that works well with Netflix could be an option. The VPN would handle the geo-unblocking, while Cloudflare’s DNS could be used for general DNS resolution on your device.
  • In summary, while Cloudflare offers a robust and fast DNS service, it does not provide the functionality needed to bypass Netflix’s geo-restrictions through a Smart DNS setup. For that, you would need a dedicated Smart DNS provider.
